1 killed, 4 hurt in multi-vehicle wreck at Rancho San Diego intersection

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A man in his 80s died late Friday afternoon after a suspected DUI crash in Rancho San Diego that left four other people seriously injured, reports FOX 5 San Diego.

The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Cuyamaca College Drive West and Jamacha Road (State Route 54) at about 4:35 p.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a suspected impaired driver in a black Honda Civic ran a red light. Authorities said the suspect was apparently trying to pass traffic, using the right-turn lane to go straight. Footage of the incident shows the Honda Civic striking a black Nissan and then a Tesla, whose drivers were trying to turn left into a shopping plaza.

The decedent, who was the rear passenger of the Nissan, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Nissan driver and their front-seat passenger were rushed to an area hospital, along with the driver of the striking Honda. All three suffered serious injuries.

It was unclear whether the driver of the Tesla, who sustained minor injuries, required transport to a hospital.

A section of eastbound Jamacha Road (SR-54) was closed at the intersection for an extended time.
