1 killed in National City crash during police pursuit

SAN DIEGO, CA — One person died early Friday morning after a police chase led to a crash near a National City intersection, reports ABC10 News.

The fatal collision took place in the 2800 block of National City Boulevard shortly after 12:00 a.m.

According to National City Police, an officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a driver who passed him southbound in the 1200 block of the road at a high rate of speed. When the driver sped away after refusing to stop, the officer began pursuing the fleeing vehicle. As the driver proceeded southbound, they lost control of their vehicle near the intersection with 28th Street, causing it to hit multiple poles and parked vehicles at a nearby Mazda dealership. The vehicle then spun out in the center divider, ejecting the driver onto the roadway.

Despite life-saving measures from first responders, the driver succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

At this time, no other information has been made available. An investigation remains in progress.
