13 injured in crash during pursuit on I-8 near Pine Valley

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — At least 13 people were hospitalized Tuesday night after a rollover crash during a Border Patrol chase on Interstate 8 near Pine Valley, reports CBS8.

CalFire San Diego said the collision occurred near Buckman Springs Road shortly after 6:12 p.m.

An early investigation shows Border Patrol agents were attempting an enforcement stop on a black Chevrolet Silverado when the driver sped away. As the fleeing pickup approached the exit, it veered back onto the interstate and rolled over in the dirt median.

Authorities said the pickup’s thirteen occupants, twelve of whom were in the bed, were all ejected in the crash.

One victim was airlifted to a local hospital, while twelve others were transported by ambulance. Of the thirteen, three were seriously injured, and ten others suffered less serious injuries.

California Highway Patrol, as well as Border Patrol’s Office of Professional Responsibility, responded to the scene.

Agents with Border Patrol took the driver of the pickup into custody following the event.
