9 hospitalized after multi-vehicle crash following police pursuit in Encinitas

ENCINITAS, CA – Nine people were taken to the hospital as a result of a multi-vehicle crash that followed a high-speed police chase in Encinitas this morning, according to information from NBC San Diego.

The chase began at around 8:30 a.m. after the operator of a Nissan Sentra, a 19-year-old man, who was reportedly driving at a high speed refused to pull over for a traffic stop. This led to a brief, high-speed chase that ended at Via Cantebria and Encinitas Boulevard when the driver allegedly made a left turn at the red light.

At least three vehicles were involved in the crash, including the Sentra, a Volkswagen Jetta, and a Chevrolet Traverse.

Inside the Traverse were an Encinitas woman, 32, and her 3-year-old and 1-year-old sons. A 25-year-old from Carlsbad was identified as the driver of the Jetta. The Nissan contained a total of five people between the ages of 16 and 20.

Nine people were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. No serious injuries were reported in the collision.

The driver of the Nissan is facing possible charges of driving while intoxicated and a felony charge of reckless evasion of a police officer.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash at this time.
