Big rig overturns, closes SR-78 near zoo in SE Escondido

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A semi-truck crash early Monday blocked California Highway 78 in both directions near San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, reports FOX 5 San Diego.

The accident happened in a rural stretch of the highway near San Pasqual Road at about 4:30 a.m.

It was not immediately clear what caused the wreck, but footage captured at the scene shows the semi rolled across both sides of the highway, which consists of only a single lane each way.

Witnesses told California Highway Patrol that the driver of the truck was able to get out of their vehicle and direct traffic before officials arrived indicating little to no injury.

Both westbound and eastbound lanes remained shut down for several hours during the response, but were later reopened at around 10:30 a.m.
