SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A U.S. Border Patrol agent was hospitalized early Monday after being hit by a suspected drunk driver on Interstate 15 near Fallbrook, according to Times of San Diego.
The incident took place at a checkpoint on the northbound interstate at Rainbow Valley Boulevard at around 2:20 a.m.
California Highway Patrol said the agent was standing in lane 2, within the checkpoint’s stop zone, when he was struck by a Mini Cooper, which caused him to go over the vehicle and land on the roadway.
Medics rushed the victim to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, where he was last listed in stable condition.
The driver of the Mini Cooper, a 30-year-old man, then continued driving but was later apprehended by CHP officers.
The suspect has since been arrested for suspected DUI, “hit-and-run resulting in great bodily injury, and DUI resulting in injuries.” He was later released from Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on a $75,000 bond. Authorities said he is expected to appear in court on March 11. His charges are currently under review by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
The suspect’s passenger, a 28-year-old woman, was also arrested “on suspicion of obstructing law enforcement officers,” but has since been released.
