Burning car explodes on I-805 NB near City Heights

SAN DIEGO, CA — A driver managed to escape a burning vehicle before it exploded Thursday morning on Interstate 805 in San Diego’s City Heights area, according to ABC10 News.

The events unfolded on the northbound side of I-805 approaching the transition to I-15, just after 5:00 a.m.

Authorities said flames had already begun engulfing the northbound vehicle when its driver pulled onto the shoulder of the highway and exited the car. Shortly after emergency crews arrived in the area, the vehicle exploded.

The cause of the fire and the explosion remains unclear at this time, but responding fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames.

No major injuries to to the driver or anyone else were reported.
