Crews respond to multi-car wreck on SR-163 in Mission Valley

SAN DIEGO, CA — At least one person was trapped Friday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash on California Highway 163 near San Diego’s Mission Valley area, according to California Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred on the southbound highway south of Interstate 8 and was first reported by CHP at 3:22 p.m.

It was not immediately clear what caused the collision, but authorities said three vehicles were involved, including a blue Volkswagen GTI, a black Jeep Wrangler, and a gray Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

The Volkswagen was found crashed into the back of the Toyota, causing the party in the first car to be trapped. All vehicles came to rest in the roadway, blocking the left lane and two center lanes.

Both an ambulance and two tow trucks were en route to the scene, indicating injuries to at least one person and serious vehicle damage.

By 3:35 p.m., only the far left lane remained open as crews responded to the site.
