Driver dies after crash with semi on I-15 in Normal Heights

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 76-year-old woman died Friday morning after her car collided with a jackknifed big rig on Interstate 15 in San Diego’s Normal Heights area, reports ABC 10 News.

The fatal accident occurred on the northbound interstate near I-8 at approximately 2:20 a.m.

According to California Highway Patrol, a 27-year-old man was driving an Amazon big rig when he lost control of the truck on the wet roadway, causing it to jackknife across several lanes.

Moments after, a Honda CR-V collided with the disabled truck and became wedged under its trailer.

Crews performed a rescue extrication to remove the trapped driver. She was then rushed to a local hospital, where she died shortly after.

No other injuries were reported in the event.

All northbound lanes before Adams Avenue was closed during the emergency response and were later reopened several hours later at 6:10 a.m, just before rush hour.

An investigation remains ongoing, and a toxicology report is pending to determine whether impairment factored into the crash and subsequent death of the woman driving the car.
