OCEANSIDE, CA – A man died when he crashed his pickup truck into a light pole in Oceanside following a police pursuit early this morning, according to information from the Times of San Diego.
The incident began in Vista at around 4:30 a.m. when a burglar alarm sounded in the 1900 block of Willow Ridge Drive. A suspicious person was reportedly seen in the pool area of the residential complex.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered a man asleep in a pickup truck that was hauling pool chemicals. The man also reportedly had what police believe to be an illegal substance on the console.
After being woken by authorities, the male suspect drove away, and a police pursuit began. Authorities lost sight of the driver after an unspecified amount of time.
Later, the suspect driver crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of Lake Boulevard and Cannon Road.
Police reportedly had difficulties with freeing the man due to fumes from the spilled pool chemicals.
The driver, whose identity was not immediately released pending family notification, died at the scene.
An officer was taken to the hospital after suffering chemical exposure-related illness. He was later released.
