Driver in critical condition after hitting big rig in hit-and-run crash

ESCONDIDO, CA – A driver is in critical condition after striking a big rig in a hit-and-run collision in Escondido last night, according to the Times of San Diego.

Authorities say the 26-year-old driver initially hit at least one vehicle on Felicita Road around 8 p.m. While fleeing the scene of the initial crash, he collided with a parked semi truck near Montview Drive.

The force of the second collision threw the man through his windshield. Emergency responders were able to free him from his car just before it burst into flames.

He was rushed to Palomar Medical Center and is reported to be in critical condition as of this morning. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident and investigators are working to determine if intoxication contributed to the crash.
