Driver injured as cement truck partially drops into Pacific Beach trench

Publish Date: 2023/08/23

SAN DIEGO, CA — A man was hospitalized Wednesday after a cement truck he was operating partially fell into a large trench in San Diego’s Pacific Beach neighborhood, reports KUSI News.

The accident occurred while the man was working at 2151 Oliver Avenue, the site of an apartment complex clubhouse.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the male driver was driving a truck loaded down with 10,000 pounds of cement when he backed into the construction site. As the truck ran over steel plates that were covering the trench, the edges of the trench, which had been eroded by recent tropical storm rains, suddenly gave way. Authorities said the back of the cement truck sank into the trench, causing unspecified injuries to the driver.

First responders transported the victim to an area hospital where his condition remains undisclosed.

Authorities had the street shut down until crews were able to remove the truck from the trench.
