Driver of disabled vehicle hit, killed by suspected drunk driver in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, CA – A man whose vehicle became disabled on I-5 was fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver in Carlsbad late Wednesday night, according to information from FOX 5 San Diego.

The crash happened on I-5 southbound near Cannon Road at around 11:17 p.m., after a gray Ford Explorer had become disabled in the right shoulder. The driver of a red Honda Accord then swerved into the shoulder, where it collided with the back of the Explorer.

The impact sent the Explorer into its driver, a 65-year-old man from Sun City, who was tending to the vehicle. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Accord, 51-year-old Carlsbad resident Douglas Payne, was taken into police custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and gross intoxication vehicular manslaughter.

The crash remains under investigation.
