Driver seriously hurt in fiery crash off I-15 near Scripps Ranch

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 28-year-old man was hospitalized early Wednesday after his car crashed off Interstate 15 and caught fire in San Diego’s Scripps Ranch area, reports ABC10 News.

The accident occurred on the southbound lanes of I-15 near State Route 52, at about 2:55 a.m.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, the California Highway Patrol said the man was driving a Toyota Camry southbound when the car ran off the right side of the roadway. After striking a metal guardrail, the car quickly became engulfed in flames.

The male driver was able to exit the vehicle on his own, but a FedEx truck driver stopped and dragged the victim farther from the burning car as the vehicle cycled through a series of explosions. Another motorist also stopped and attempted to control the blaze before responding fire crews were able to extinguish the fire altogether.

CHP officials said the victim, who was conscious during the rescue, was rushed to a local hospital with major but non-life-threatening injuries, including a serious leg injury.

The CHP continues to investigate. As of this writing, drugs and/or alcohol have been ruled out as factors in the crash.
