Excavator falls into Miramar sinkhole, shelter-in-place enforced

SAN DIEGO, CA — Several businesses and residents were asked to shelter in place Tuesday after construction equipment fell into a sinkhole in San Diego’s Miramar area, damaging water and gas lines, reports NBC San Diego.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said the incident occurred in the 8040 block of Miramar Road.

Details are limited, but a sinkhole opened on the road, causing an excavator to fall in, rupturing water and gas lines.

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) crews had to shut down the gas line and turn off the water in the surrounding area, impacting nearly a thousand customers.

No one was reported injured in the event.

Authorities continue to investigate what caused the sinkhole. It was unclear when the road was expected to reopen.
