SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 22-year-old Lake Elsinore resident died Monday afternoon after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle during an Escondido police chase, reports ABC10 News.
The fatal wreck occurred at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Harding Street, in the city’s Midway area, shortly after 12:00 p.m.
Escondido Police said a California Highway Patrol trooper had initially attempted to pull over the motorcyclist for speeding southbound in the area of Interstate 15 and State Route 76.
When the fleeing motorcyclist later saw an Escondido police officer, he accelerated at high speed while on Washington Avenue. Moments after running a red light at the Harding Street intersection, the bike collided with the front end of a northbound vehicle that was traveling on a green light. The impact of the crash caused the motorcyclist to lose control. He then ejected from the bike and hit the front end of a westbound vehicle.
Despite life-saving measures administered by responding officers and then Escondido fire paramedics, the motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries at the scene, confirmed officials. The victim’s identity remains undisclosed at this time.
An investigation by the Escondido Police Traffic Unit remains underway.
