Gas leak in National City leads to evacuations

SAN DIEGO, CA – Construction crews accidentally ruptured a gas line in National City yesterday, leading to precautionary evacuations that lasted through much of the day.

NBC 7 San Diego reports that the crews had been working on a project outside Ira Harbison Elementary School, close to the intersection of 8th Street and Olive Avenue, when they accidentally ruptured a 6-inch gas pipe at about 10:30 a.m. The school’s students were evacuated, as were local businesses and about 75 nearby homes.

The mandatory evacuation was lifted by 7:15 p.m., although gas outages continued for some time afterwards.

Fortunately, it does not appear as though anyone was hurt as a result of the accident.
