Man critically hurt as carjacker crashes car into Coronado toll structure

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 33-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday morning when an attempted carjacking led to a crash at a Coronado toll plaza, reports ABC10 News.

The Coronado Police Department said the incident occurred off of Orange Avenue at around 5:20 a.m.

Preliminary details indicate the victim had jumped onto the hood of his tan sedan in an attempt to stop a teenage carjacker and a female passenger from taking the vehicle. At one point, the sedan crashed into a concrete toll plaza, critically injuring the victim.

CHP officers arrived on the scene to find the sedan facing eastbound on the westbound side, and the 33-year-old man lying injured in the next lane over.

First responders rushed the patient to an area hospital in critical condition.

The driver and passenger, both 18, fled the scene on foot but were apprehended by police on a bridge access road.

Officials said the teen driver faces multiple charges, including “driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol,” “stealing a vehicle,” “felony hit and run,” and “attempted murder.”
