Multiple hurt in pileup involving at least 14 vehicles on I-8 in Mission Valley

SAN DIEGO, CA — Over two dozen vehicles were involved in a series of crashes Friday morning on Interstate 8 in San Diego’s Mission Valley area, reports NBC San Diego.
The events unfolded on the westbound lanes near the exit to Taylor Street and Hotel Circle at around 5:00 a.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol, two passenger cars were initially involved in a crash that led to multiple other crashes. In total, as many as nine separate accidents involving at least 14 vehicles were recorded.
Authorities have not confirmed the number of people hurt, but several patients were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.
Dispatch communications at the time of the event show CHP calling for 15 tow trucks.
A SigAlert was activated in the area, with all westbound lanes blocked for at least an hour as crews worked to clear the roadway. By 6:30 a.m., all lanes were reopened to traffic.
It remains unclear what caused the initial wreck, but NBC San Diego crews observed drizzly, wet weather conditions in the area at the time.
