One killed, one hurt in rollover crash on SR-78 near Ramona

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 72-year-old man died Tuesday night after a single-vehicle rollover crash that hurt another on California Highway 78 near Ramona, reports FOX 5 San Diego.

The accident occurred on a stretch of SR-78 west of Rancho Santa Teresa Drive at around 8:10 p.m.

The man was at the wheel of a Chevy 1500 pickup truck going west on the highway when he lost control of the vehicle after failing to negotiate a curve in the road. The pickup ran off the north side of the roadway and went over an embankment, causing it to overturn.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle, according to California Highway Patrol. Medics administered life-saving measures to the victim, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

A 32-year-old passenger was extricated from the Chevy before being transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. Authorities said his injuries were considered non-life-threatening.

An investigation remained in progress to determine whether the driver had been wearing a seatbelt. Drugs and alcohol were not suspected factors in the crash.
