Pedestrian fatally hit by driver on El Cajon sidewalk

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 20-year-old woman died Wednesday evening after being struck by a vehicle while standing on a sidewalk in northeast El Cajon, reports San Diego County News.

The fatal incident occurred in the 600 block of North 2nd Street, near the entrance ramp to Interstate 8, shortly before 8:49 p.m.

An early investigation indicates the young woman was on the sidewalk near the crosswalk at 601 North 2nd Street at the same time a silver Hyundai Sonata was heading northbound in lane 3. The Hyundai traveled onto the sidewalk and hit the victim before continuing northbound.

Officials said the vehicle went on to hit a traffic signal light and a street sign. Its driver turned east onto Naranca Avenue before coming to a stop in the middle of the road.

El Cajon Police officers and medics arrived at the scene to find the young woman lying in the roadway.

The victim was rushed to Sharp Memorial Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries, confirmed authorities.

The driver, a 22-year-old man, was found to have been under the influence of a controlled substance and taken into custody. He has since been booked into the San Diego County Jail and faces multiple charges.
