Pedestrian hit, critically hurt by SUV in Gaslamp Quarter

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 27-year-old man was hospitalized early Sunday after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a road in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, reports FOX 5 San Diego.

The incident occurred in the 800 block of 5th Avenue approaching 500 E Street at about 12:36 a.m.

According to San Diego Police, a 54-year-old man was behind the wheel of a 2023 GMC Yukon traveling northbound on 5th Avenue when the SUV hit the pedestrian, who was crossing east to west in the south crosswalk. Authorities said the victim had traveled against the red hand and into the path of the vehicle.

The victim, who suffered a life-threatening brain bleed, was rushed to an area hospital.

An investigation by San Diego Police Department traffic units was underway, but officials said alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor.
