Pedestrian killed by hit-and-run driver near I-5 onramp in Carlsbad

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 20-year-old man from Texas died early Saturday after being hit by a vehicle on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad, reports ABC10 News.

The fatal incident took place on the southbound side of I-5 at the Poinsettia Lane entrance ramp. Authorities responded to the scene shortly after 2:15 a.m.

Preliminary details indicate that a white Toyota Prius was traveling southbound on I-5 when it hit the male pedestrian at the onramp. Authorities did not specify where the victim was positioned at the time of the crash, but the Prius fled the scene.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Early Wednesday, July 19, investigators from the California Highway Patrol’s Oceanside Area Office were able to locate and arrest the driver of the Prius. The suspect, identified as Andrew Bryan Dean, faces several charges that include felony hit-and-run.

An investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the event.
