SDPD officer hit, injured by driver on I-5 near Oceanside

Publish Date: 2022/04/29

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — An off-duty San Diego police officer was hit by a car Friday morning while trying to clear vehicle debris off Interstate 5 in Oceanside, according to Times of San Diego.

The incident occurred on the southbound lanes at State Route 76 shortly before 6:00 a.m.

An early investigation indicates a 47-year-old Granada Hills resident was driving a semi-truck southbound on the interstate when two of the truck’s tires detached and rolled onto the southbound lanes.

Shortly after a traffic backup had formed, the off-duty officer pulled over and tried to clear the tires from the roadway. Moments later, she was hit in the fourth lane by a BMW driven by a 22-year-old man.

Authorities said the officer suffered minor injuries, but it was unclear whether she was taken to a hospital.

No details on any pending charges or citations have been released as of this writing.

An investigation remains ongoing, but at this time, intoxication is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
