SAN DIEGO, CA – A suspect led police on dramatic chase that began in Chula Vista early Saturday morning and eventually led to three separate crashes, the Times of San Diego reports.
The chain of events was put into motion on Friday afternoon, when a witness told police they’d seen a man break the window of a car parked at a Wal-Mart located in 1100 block of Broadway. An officer recognized the man as a wanted criminal and attempted to approach him, but the suspect hit the officer with a wrench and fled.
The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His current condition is unknown.
The pursuit began in earnest at 2 a.m. the next morning, when a police officer in National City spotted the suspect behind the wheel of a stolen Dodge pickup truck. The officer gave pursuit, and the suspect fled onto I-805 heading towards Chula Vista, reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. He eventually exited at H Street, pulled a U-turn on the ramp, and drove against traffic into the pursuing cruiser. Uninjured, the National City police officer continued the chase.
Now heading north in the southbound lanes, the suspect hit an SUV driven by a freelance journalist, fracturing their arm. The suspect was also injured in the collision, but was able to flee the scene on foot.
The chase was back on by 3 a.m., when National City police again found the man, now in a second stolen truck. Police pursued the man onto eastbound SR 94, where he once more turned into oncoming traffic and eventually caused a third crash.
The man was finally apprehended near Mount Hope Cemetery, and was treated for a leg injury at the scene. He is currently facing multiple felony charges.
