Teen on e-scooter hit, seriously hurt by work van in Encinitas

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 15-year-old boy was hospitalized Thursday evening after his electric scooter collided with a work van while changing lanes in Encinitas, according to ABC10 News.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said the accident occurred in the 500 block of South El Camino Real. Deputies and Encinitas Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene shortly after 6:00 p.m.

An early investigation by the department’s North Coastal Station indicates the teen was operating an electric scooter northbound. At one point, the teen made a lane change in the path of the van, causing a crash.

The teen, who suffered “major injuries,” was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

The van driver, who cooperated with investigators after the crash, was not reported hurt. Drugs and/or are not believed to be factors in the incident.

As the investigation remains ongoing, anyone with information or footage of the event is asked to contact the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station Traffic Division at 760-966-3500.
