Three injured in crash with loose boat on I-5 in Chula Vista

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — Three people were hospitalized early Monday after their car was hit by a boat that came loose from a trailer on Interstate 5 in Chula Vista, reports ABC 10 News.

The incident occurred on the southbound lanes of the interstate near J Street at approximately 12:30 a.m.

California Highway Patrol said a Mercedes-Benz was traveling in the fast lane when it collided with the 30-foot-long boat in the roadway. The crash caused the vehicle to skid for about a quarter of a mile before it stopped.

The driver of the Mercedes was able to self-extricate, but two other occupants were trapped inside. Responding firefighters cut into the roof of the wreckage to access the victims.

Authorities said all three occupants were transported to a local hospital.

An investigation was underway to find the southbound trailer that was hauling the vessel.
