Two hospitalized after DUI crash in National City

SAN DIEGO, CA – Two people were taken to the hospital after a drunk driver crashed into a car on State Route 54 in National City on Thursday morning.

According to local news, a man was speeding as he headed east on SR-54 in a gold Toyota sedan. He drifted from his lane and collided with a silver sedan, driven by a woman, which flipped his own near I-805 at about 11:45 a.m.

The driver and passenger in the overturned car were able to crawl from the wrecked vehicle.

Authorities smelled alcohol on the breath. The man resisted arrested but a CHP officer, with some help, was able to apprehend him and ordered a blood test at the hospital he was transported to for injuries. The woman was also taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The passenger in the man’s car, another man, had asked the driver for a ride and realized his friend was drunk before getting in the vehicle. He was not injured.
