Two hospitalized after wrong-way wreck on I-8 WB in Alpine

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — Two people were injured early Thursday morning in a wrong-way collision on Interstate 8 near east Alpine, reports ABC 10 News.

The accident occurred on the westbound interstate near East Victoria Drive shortly after 2:00 a.m.

According to California Highway Patrol, a woman was driving a gold Nissan Altima was eastbound on the westbound lanes when she struck a blue compact car head-on, causing both vehicles to catch on fire.

Responding fire crews were able to rescue both drivers before either one of them suffered burns.

The driver of the Altima and the male driver of the blue car were transported to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.

An investigation was underway to determine whether or not the wrong-way driver was impaired at the time of the crash.
