Two injured after plane crash-lands on I-5 in Del Mar

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — Two people were injured Tuesday afternoon after a small plane crash-landed and hit at least four vehicles on Interstate 5 in Del Mar, according to San Diego Union-Tribune.

The event took place on the southbound lanes of I-5 near Via de la Valle shortly after noon.

A single-engine Piper PA-32 aircraft, which had taken off from Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa, was traveling near the coast approaching Del Mar when it experienced mechanical issues.

Its pilot attempted to land the plane in a dirt field, but instead descended over the freeway where it struck multiple vehicles before colliding with the median.

Two people in separate vehicles were transported to hospitals with minor injuries, which included cuts from shattered glass.

The pilot and the plane’s single passenger were not reported injured.

The incident is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

All lanes of I-5 were shut down in both directions and were gradually reopened throughout the afternoon.
