U.S. Marine fatally hit by driver on I-5 near Camp Pendleton

Publish Date: 2021/12/09

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 20-year-old man died early Monday after being hit by a box truck while helping crash victims on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton, reports The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The fatal crash occurred at the site of another wreck on the south interstate south of Las Pulgas Road shortly after 3:22 a.m.

California Highway Patrol said a southbound Ford Edge SUV had initially crashed and was blocking travel lanes with no lights illuminated.

The young man, a U.S. Marine who was stationed at a nearby base, stopped to help the SUV’s two occupants. Moments later, a box truck driven by a 47-year-old man crashed into them.

Authorities said the Marine died from his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, a 36-year-old man, was transported to a local hospital along with his passenger, a 31-year-old woman. No details on the severity of their condition have been released.

CHP said the driver of the SUV was expected to be booked into jail pending multiple felony charges upon his release from the hospital.

The event left several southbound lanes closed during an investigation, creating a miles-long traffic backup.
