UPDATE: Accused man denies running down pedestrian with truck

SAN DIEGO, CA – The man accused of deliberately striking a pedestrian with his pickup truck on April 28 has pleaded not guilty to the victim’s murder, Fox 5 reports.

Police allege that 32-year-old Zachary Addison Porter struck and killed Met Austin Siapengo Simon, also 32, in the 1100 block of Eighth Avenue at approximately 4:30 a.m. that morning. They believe that the incident was part of a misguided attempt on the part of Porter to impress a woman.

Porter fled the scene, returned home to La Mesa, and then crossed the border. He was discovered by Mexican authorities in Tijuana on June 1, due to the distinctive truck that was used in the killing. He was turned over to the San Diego police the following day and has been in custody since.

Porter is being held without bail, and has a readiness conference scheduled for July 9.
