UPDATE: Authorities ID victim fatally hit by car on SR-52 in Kearny Mesa

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 61-year-old man has been identified as the driver who died Friday afternoon after being hit by a vehicle on State Route 52 in San Diego’s Kearny Mesa area, reports FOX 5 San Diego.

The fatal incident occurred on the westbound side of SR-52 near the Exit 3 ramp to northbound Interstate 805, on July 28 at about 12:00 p.m.

California Highway Patrol officials said the events unfolded when the victim, Richard Anthony Rollo, got into a minor property damage-only wreck with a driver in a Freightliner semi-truck.

After pulling onto the shoulder near the SR-52 onramp to I-805, the victim exited his Acura sedan to talk to the semi driver, who had pulled into the gore point between the I-805 main lanes and the ramp. Authorities said the victim crossed the transition lanes to get to the other driver and was trying to cross back to his own vehicle when he was hit by a white Ford pickup truck in lane #1. The impact of the crash sent him into lane #4 of I-805.

Responding medics pronounced the victim deceased at the scene at about 12:17 p.m.

The westbound SR-52 onramp, as well as the right northbound lane of I-805 south of Governor Drive, were shut down for about two hours during the emergency response.

An investigation by the CHP San Diego area office remains ongoing.
