UPDATE: Authorities ID victim hit, killed by lost load on SR-52 near Clairemont

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 72-year-old woman died last Friday afternoon in north San Diego when her car was hit by construction materials from an overturned pickup truck, reports KUSI.

The incident occurred on the eastbound lanes of State Route 52 under the Interstate 805 interchange, near San Clemente Park. It was first reported shortly before 1:00 p.m.

Authorities said the woman was a passenger in a Mercedes-Benz SUV traveling eastbound on SR-52 when a pickup truck overturned on a freeway bridge above, causing a bag of cement and other materials to crash on the SUV’s windshield.

The victim, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene, has since been identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office as Karen Cooper, of La Jolla.

Neither driver of the SUV and the pickup were hurt in the event.

The pickup truck driver told officials his vehicle’s load had shifted while on the elevated connector ramp from southbound I-805 to eastbound SR-52, causing the rollover.

The California Highway Patrol has not confirmed whether any charges are pending.
