SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 75-year-old male driver died last Friday, April 28, after a rollover crash on Interstate 805 in National City, according to FOX 5 San Diego.
The fatal wreck occurred on the southbound lanes south of Division Street, on April 28, just after 9:00 a.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates the victim was driving a Nissan truck in lane 4. The California Highway Patrol said a commercial vehicle, believed to be a tow truck hauling a mini excavator, was seen swaying back and forth as it traveled in lane 3.
It was not immediately clear whether the two vehicles made contact, but at one point, the driver of the Nissan lost control of their truck. Moments later, the Nissan traveled down a dirt embankment and rolled before colliding with a light pole. It then landed on the 43rd Street entrance ramp below.
CHP officials said both occupants of the Nissan, neither of whom was properly secured at the time of the wreck, were ejected in the crash. The male driver was pronounced deceased on the scene. His adult passenger was rushed to Scripps Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.
Following the wreck, authorities activated a lookout alert for the commercial vehicle, but it has yet to be located. Anyone who may have witnessed the fatal event, or who may have video, is urged to contact Officer J. Rutherford at 858-293-6000.
