Woman, child hit by driver while cycling in Imperial Beach

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A woman and her child were injured Tuesday evening when they were struck by a DUI suspect while riding bicycles in Imperial Beach, reports ABC 10 News.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said the incident occurred at the corner of 11th Street and Fern Avenue at about 8:12 p.m.
An early investigation indicates a 78-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on 11th Street when he hit the two cyclists as they rode across the street at Fern Avenue.
Authorities said both victims were thrown from their bikes. The woman suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital where she was listed in stable condition. The child sustained minor injuries, but it was unclear whether they were also taken to a hospital.
Responding officers arrested the driver after suspecting him of being under the influence of drugs. He has since been booked into San Diego Central Jail.
No further updates have been shared at this time, but an investigation by Imperial Traffic deputies and the Sheriff’s STAR team was underway.
