Woman fatally hit by suspected DUI driver on SR-78 in Vista

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 27-year-old woman died early Sunday after being hit by a suspected drunken driver on California Highway 78 in southwest Vista, according to San Diego Union-Tribune.

California Highway Patrol said the fatal incident occurred on the a span of SR-78 near South Emerald Drive shortly before 6:00 a.m.

An investigation shows the woman was walking around a road construction sign when she entered the westbound lanes of the highway and was hit by a Volkswagen sedan.

Authorities said the driver fled the scene and returned to the site about an hour after, where she saw the victim lying on the freeway’s right shoulder. She then drove to a nearby gas station and called 911.

Responding CHP officers started life-saving measures on the victim, but she died from her injuries at the scene.

The driver was later arrested for suspected hit-and-run and driving under the influence, confirmed authorities.

The case is currently under review by the District Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.
