1 dead after multi-vehicle wreck on I-5 near Escondido, DUI suspect arrested

Publish Date: 2023/08/10

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A woman died Wednesday night after a multi-vehicle crash involving a DUI suspect on Interstate 5 near Escondido, reports ABC10 News.

The fatal collision occurred on the northbound lanes of I-5 near Exit 32 to State Route 78.

An early investigation by the California Highway Patrol indicates a black Chevrolet Corvette was traveling northbound on I-5 near the interchange. At one point, the Corvette veered to the right of the roadway, where it struck a red Dodge Caliber that was parked on the right shoulder. The Corvette then returned onto the interstate, where it collided with a big rig and came to a rest.

According to the CHP, a female passenger in the parked Dodge Caliber succumbed to fatal injuries suffered in the crash.

The Calibur’s four other occupants were rushed to local hospitals for injuries ranging from moderate to major.

Authorities said the driver of the Corvette, 39-year-old Edwin Vincent Hoffman, of Oceanside, was arrested at the scene. He faces multiple charges that include “felony driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run, and gross vehicular manslaughter.”
