13 killed in March SUV crash near US-Mexico border

IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA — Thirteen people died in early March after an SUV carrying 25 people collided with a semi truck on California Highway 115 east of El Centro, according to Los Angeles Times.

The fatal accident took place in the northbound lanes of CA-115 at around 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2nd.

A 2011 Peterbilt tractor-trailer was headed north when a 1997 Ford Expedition suddenly pulled in front of it at an intersection, resulting in a T-bone collision.

Twelve people died at the scene, including the 28-year-old Mexican national who was driving the Expedition. Another person was en route to El Centro Regional Medical Center when they succumbed to their injuries.

Three people were transported to Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District in Brawley, while a woman and a teenager were taken by airlift to Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego. Six others were transported to El Centro Regional, and one other person was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Those killed and injured in the SUV ranged in ages from 15 to 53, according to authorities.

The truck driver, a 68-year-old El Centro resident, was transported to a Palm Springs hospital with serious injuries.
