Child passenger killed in suspected DUI crash at Oceanside intersection

Publish Date: 2023/07/05

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 12-year-old boy died late Tuesday night after a T-bone crash in Oceanside that sent four other people to the hospital, reports ABC10 News.

The fatal collision took place at the corner of North Myers Street and Surfrider Way, at about 11:00 p.m.

According to Oceanside Police, a white Volkswagen was speeding northbound on Myers Street. As it entered the intersection, it broadsided a dark-colored Nissan Altima that was heading eastbound on Surfrider Way.

The 12-year-old boy, a passenger in the Altima, succumbed to his injuries at the scene, confirmed officials.

The driver and another passenger in the Altima, as well as two occupants in the Volkswagen, all suffered injuries considered non-life-threatening. First responders transported all four patients to an area hospital.

It was unclear whether the driver of the causing Volkswagen was one of those hurt, but they were arrested for an investigation into “driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter.”

While the investigation remains ongoing, police say speed and alcohol appear to have contributed to the wreck.
