UPDATE: DUI suspect arrested after fatal wrong-way crash on I-805 near US-MX border

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 29-year-old man was taken into custody following a head-on crash Wednesday afternoon in south San Diego that claimed the life of another man, according to ABC10 News.

The fatal wreck occurred on the southbound side of Interstate 805, just north of Camino De La Plaza, near the United States-Mexico border. It was first reported at around 11:54 a.m.

California Highway Patrol officials said the suspect, local resident Fernando Goneortiz, was driving a white Audi sedan northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway. While in lane #2, the Audi collided head-on with a blue Honda van.

The driver of the van, identified only as a Hispanic male at this time, succumbed to his injuries at the scene, confirmed the CHP.

Goneortiz, who suffered major but non-life-threatening injuries, was transported to a local hospital. He was placed under custody for suspected intoxication and faces multiple charges, including felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
