UPDATE: DUI suspect charged after double fatal Midway crash

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 33-year-old man has been formally charged after a suspected DUI crash that killed two people Saturday night in San Diego’s Midway District, according to CBS8.

The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Sports Arena Boulevard and Rosecrans Street, shortly after 9:00 p.m.

According to San Diego Police, the suspect was intoxicated and driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his Toyota pickup truck. The pickup struck a center median, which launched it into the air before it crashed into a Toyota Sienna van that was carrying a family of four.

Two passengers in the backseat of the van, a 23-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two other occupants in the van were transported to a local hospital with back injuries.

Authorities said the suspect was also transported to a hospital with broken bones. He was then taken to the downtown jail and now faces multiple charges, including “two counts of vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI charges, and a misdemeanor count of driving without a license.”

A 6-month old German Shepherd who was in the van at the time of the crash was initially reported missing. The following day, he was found at the nearby San Diego Airport parking lot and later released back to his owners.
