Zipline operator dies after saving woman in Pauma Valley

Publish Date: 2021/11/03

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 34-year-old man died Monday morning after falling 100 feet while saving a woman at a popular zipline destination in Pauma Valley, according to FOX 5 San Diego.

The fatal incident occurred at La Jolla Zip Zoom Zipline on the La Jolla India Reservation on Saturday.

The victim worked as a zipline operator at the location and was helping a female customer get hooked on the platform. A witness at the scene said the woman began to slide out on the line, prompting the victim to grab onto her harness, which caused both people to slide out nearly 100 feet above ground.

The victim expressed concern about the woman falling due to the heavy weight on the line, and appeared to have let go.

Cal Fire crews responded to the scene and pulled the victim up to the road via a low-angle rope rescue system. Authorities said he suffered major trauma injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, where he died the next day.

The woman was not reported injured.

No further information has been released at this time, but tribal officials with the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians will be conducting an investigation into the incident.
